Bring a question. Expect a clear answer.
Understand the rules before agreeing to care.
The US answer depends on the exact preparation and the rules its maker follows. Here is where the dated record draws the lines.
Where does approval stand?
As of September 28, 2026, the US market has no approved sermorelin drug.
The former product, sermorelin (Geref, discontinued), had its approvals withdrawn effective June 18, 2009.
In March 2013, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded that Geref had not been removed because of safety or effectiveness concerns.
That conclusion did not approve the pharmacy-made products offered now.
Can a pharmacy make it lawfully?
Reading the FDA documents together, as of September 28, 2026, points to a possible path for a pharmacy to make sermorelin acetate.
The pharmacy must be state-licensed and fill a valid prescription for a named patient.
All the other federal terms and any added state limits still apply.
This reading rests on the ingredient’s use in a drug that once held approval.
The reviewed FDA papers do not name sermorelin under the ordinary pharmacy route.
It is a reading of the rules, not a blank check for every offer.
A question to take with you
Which compounding route applies to this preparation, and how are its conditions being met?
Evidence to keep in view
The ingredient name needs to be exact
The FDA’s designation concerns sermorelin acetate, not every chemical form that might be called sermorelin.
Following a compounding route leaves the finished medicine without FDA approval as of September 28, 2026.
What if an outsourcing facility makes it?
As of September 28, 2026, the FDA places sermorelin acetate in the under-evaluation group for registered outsourcing facilities.
That group is called Category 1 under section 503B, the law for those facilities.
The FDA says it does not plan action for using those ingredients if the guidance conditions are met; this is not final listing or approval.
The category document is dated March 21, 2025; that is the version in the September 28, 2026 source review.
Ask the service to explain the route in plain words and identify the document it relies on. Keep that answer with the pharmacy name.
